Rare, le nom est un génitif de filiation formé sur Velleman, lui aussi peu courant et porté dans le Nord. Il pourrait désigner celui qui travaille les peaux (moyen néerlandais "velle" = peau). Mais on envisagera aussi une variante graphique de Welleman, Wellemans, dérivés en -man formés sans doute sur Willem (= Guillaume).
